How Do I?

Access accommodations for students with disabilities?

To register with Student Disability Service, students need to make an appointment with Neera Jain, Director, at (415) 476-4318 or neera.jain@ucsf.edu. At the initial meeting, students are required to complete an intake form and to present current documentation of their disability to help determine eligibility for specific services. Deaf students who request either sign language interpreters or real time captioning services will be referred to the respective deaf services coordinator.

Find out if I qualify for special accommodations?

After documentation has been reviewed, SDS will provide you with a letter verifying your eligibility for services and academic accommodations. You will be instructed in the accommodation procedures for your specific School or Program. Documentation must remain on file in SDS and will be treated in a confidential manner.

Ensure my privacy about my disability?

UCSF neither imposes accommodations on students, nor pre-empts their responsibility to define their needs and make sure that they are met. The student must take the lead to identify his/her needs to SDS, work with us to specify, arrange and follow through on accommodations, and alert us in a timely manner when problems are encountered. It is the responsibility of SDS to maintain the confidentiality of students registered with our office. Should faculty, university staff or service providers (e.g. notetakers) inquire about the nature of your disability, we will respond only with your permission.

Prepare for an emergency evacuation on campus?

Talk to instructors at the beginning of each quarter to let them know you may need assistance getting out of the classroom and building in the case of a fire, earthquake or other disaster. Ask for their assistance in working out an evacuation plan. During an emergency, you can also look for a building Floor Warden (wearing an orange reflective ID vest) and make your need for assistance known.
